EdNinja

A San Diego based startup, EdNinja was founded in 2011 with the goal of creating quality educational content for children that have been diagnosed with autism and other learning disorders. With the objective of creating 7 iOS apps from scratch, the ninja team needed a team flexible enough to adapt to modern educational techniques and at the same time use the best technology to enhance children’s experience while being fully compliant at all times with privacy regulations for children’s applications or games.

In addition to mobile development and coding involved for the ninja collection, our team designed and executed the UX and UI of all apps, created the backstory to the ninja family and helped with the overall marketing and online app visibility. To this date, EdNinja has thousands of users in 20 countries, and is one of the leading special app provider in the United States.

Building EdNinja

The EdNinja team needed to overcome two major milestones in order to achieve a successful product. The first one was time. They received funding which required them to deliver seven fully functional applications by the end of 2013. This meant that the team had to design and execute an 2 apps every 3 months.

The second challenge was meeting special education standards for both children and therapists. When it comes to children with special needs, everything matters: from graphic design, coloring, reward system and even character development and facial expressions. As for the therapists, the team needed to create an in-app management system that was easy to use and could allow parents, teachers or therapists to manage and create content and toggle between options.

Observing Agile methodology, a bi-weekly meeting was held with EdNinja and the ArkusNexus team to evaluate development and design efforts giving our client the visibility they needed to make sure their product was on the right track.

UI / UX Design

We knew that the graphic design had to appeal to children and therapists/ teachers alike. Additionally, it had to adapt to the requirements special needs exercises. After several discovery sessions with the EdNinja team, we were able to create a UI that made the apps engaging for children and at the same time an educational asset for therapists and teachers.

The ninja apps

From the beginning, the goal was to build engaging educational apps that made it easy for children with special needs to learn while playing. On the teacher side, we needed to create a series of modules that allowed user tracking and measure performance. In addition, we added a content management module that allowed teachers, therapists and parents to create custom activities based on the children academic needs.
